The Witching Hour
Developing the visual identity and branding collateral for the 15th Annual Brown | RISD Dual Degree Exhibition.

TheBrown | RISD Dual Degree Exhibition is an annual display of student work that showcases the interdisciplinarity of the program.

The 15th Annual Exhibition featured 51 pieces of various mediums from 34 different artists. It was held at theCohen Gallery, at theGranoff Center for Creative Arts, and explored themes of magic and mystery; rites and rituals; curiosities and wonder; and the grotesque, fantastical, and uncanny.

“The exhibition is supposed to showcase all the different things that dual degree students are doing, which range from your traditional fine art to some experimental video and audio. I think it shows that there’s not one way of being a dual degree artist … and a lot of that is on display at (the) Granoff.”

— Naya Lee Chang

The brand was developed with an attention to the ‘fantastical’ as it subverts traditional graphic identities and associations of ‘witching,’ The minimal background alludes to artists’ processes of creation, juxtaposed with ornate typefaces created an eerie and grim identity in line with the theme of the exhibition. The graphic of the moon with the hands of a clock speaks to the name of the show directly: The Witching Hour. Laptop stickers were designed in the brand colors, to serve as promotional material for the opening reception.
